Brave Frontier 2 is the sequel to Brave Frontier, a mobile RPG that ditches the slot machine mechanics so common in mobile roleplaying games but offers a level of complexity to the gameplay rarely seen in these types of experiences. On the surface, it's not so different from traditional Japanese RPGs offered by Square Enix. Where it differentiates itself is in the scale. You form together a party of adventurers and combine them into teams to fight a series of increasingly difficult quest based battles.

Instead of making you rely on gacha mechanics to unlock new characters, every new character you unlock is bought int a shop with in game currency. That removes the disappointment of getting a character you didn't want and gives players a lot more leverage to build out a team that strategically benefits them. The developers are pretty generous with their currency, and you're sure to amass a decent collection of characters in a very short amount of time. Properly leveling them up and finding the right combination of powers to overcome your threats is critical, and the vast cast means that there are a lot of strategies you can employ to vanquish your opponents.

Up to five different characters can be brought into each stage with you, and combining powers properly and timing your attacks can have a major impact on whether you win or lose. Timing is important here, and getting it right allows you to employ devastating combination attacks that can quickly rip through the opposition. Adding an extra level of complexity are established relationships between characters. Attacking with compatible characters in succession allows you to pull off significantly more powerful attacks that can dramatically affect your odds of success. You also have the ability to take one unit from a friend into battle with you to even the odds, and in the early levels, bringing in a powerful ally can be a huge boon.

While the basics of gameplay are pretty simplistic, there are a lot of modes to work through here. Characters can be leveled up, awakened, and equipped with a variety of weapons, armor, and accessories. And in addition to the meaty main campaign, there are also trials, frontier hunter, and arena mode. The latter allows you to compete against other players to see who's the best. Adding an extra layer of complexity is the addition of pets that can offer a strategic edge in battle and which can be evolved to become more powerful.

The story itself is typical fantasy fare, but it mixes things up by offering two main protagonists. Players can swap back and forth between them, and engaging in both sides of the story mode will reveal a richer story that really reveals the complications of the fantasy world Brave Frontier 2 takes place in.
